Adware

Adware, also known as an Adbot, can do a number of things from profile your online surfing and spending habits to popping up annoying ad windows as you surf. In some cases Adware has been bundled (i.e. peer-to-peer file swapping products) with other software without the user's knowledge or slipped in the fine print of a EULA (End User License Agreement). Not all Adware is bad, but often users are annoyed by adware's intrusive behavior. Keep in mind that by removing Adware sometimes the program it came bundled with for free may stop functioning. Some Adware, dubbed a "BackDoor Santa" may not perform any activity other then profile a user's surfing activity for study.

AdWare can be obnoxious in that it performs "drive-by downloads". Drive-by downloads are accomplished by providing a misleading dialogue box or other methods of stealth installation. Many times users have no idea they have installed the application. Often Adware makers make their application difficult to uninstall.

A "EULA" or End User License Agreement is the agreement you accept when you click "OK" or "Continue" when you are installing software. Many users never bother to read the EULA.

It is imperative to actually read this agreement before you install any software. No matter how tedious the EULA, you should be able to find out the intent BEFORE you install the software. If you have questions about the EULA- e-mail the company and ask them for clarification.

Spyware

Spyware is potentially more dangerous beast than Adware because it can record your keystrokes, history, passwords, and other
confidential and private information. Spyware is often sold as a spouse monitor, child monitor, a surveillance tool or simply as a tool to spy on users to gain unauthorized access. Spyware is also known as: snoopware, PC surveillance, key logger, system recorders, Parental control software, PC recorder, Detective software and Internet monitoring software.

Spyware covertly gathers user information and activity without the user's knowledge. Spy software can record your keystrokes as you type them, passwords, credit card numbers, sensitive information, where you surf, chat logs, and can even take random screenshots of your activity. Basically whatever you do on the computer is completely viewable by the spy. You do not have to be connected to the Internet to be spied upon.

The latest permutations of Spyware include the use of routines to mail out user activity via e-mail or posting information to the web where the spy can view it at their leisure. Also many spyware vendors use "stealth routines" and "polymorphic" (meaning to change" techniques to avoid detection and removal by popular anti-spy software. In some cases Spyware vendors have went as far as to counter-attack anti-spy packages by attempting to break their use. In addition they may use routines to re-install the spyware application after it has been detected.

Malware

Malware is slang for malicious software. Malware is software designed specifically to disrupt a computer system. A trojan horse , worm or a virus could be classified as Malware. Some advertising software can be malicious in that it can try to re-install itself after you remove it.

For the purpose of simplicity Malware is software specifically engineered to damage your machine or interrupt the normal computing environment.

Examples of Malware include:

Page Hijackers

Hijackers are applications that attempt to usurp control of the user's home page and reset it with one of the hijackers choosing. They are a low security threat, but obnoxious. Most Hijackers use stealth techniques or trick dialogue boxes to perform installation.
Dialers

A dialer is a type of software used by pornographic vendors. Once dialer software is downloaded the user is disconnected from their modem's usual Internet service provider and another phone number and the user is billed. While dialers do not spy on users they are malevolent in nature because they can cause huge financial harm to the victim.

The test :

Let's get Kazaa & LimeWire Lyric Finder from npssoftware.com .

When the installation begin ( pic.1 ) the EULA says '' YOU MUST REVIEW AND AGREE '' to install the MarketScore spyware ! After that a nice window show what kind of spyware we install ( pic.2 ) , but this is not all, another EULA ask the user to agree with '' Bargain Buddy '' spyware ( pic.3 ) . Finally the installation end and the first thing installed on my pc is MarketScore , lol ! ( pic.4 - pic.5 ) .

The results :

Did the KLLF EULA mentioned something about CoolWebSearch spyware ?? No . Well, i have that too smile

A lot of spyware , a crap program and a messed up pc .

Spy Sweeper first scan ( pic.1- pic.2 ) , no comments .

How to avoid spyware :

1. When you install a p2p program always read the EULA ! I know is boring but is healthy sometimes .

2. If you want to install a p2p program download it from trusted sites , search some forums first , ask some friends about it .

3. Do not trust sites that offer p2p programs with slogans like '' 10 MILLION DOWNLOADS '' or '' DOWNLOAD 10000 MOVIES '' or '' FREE SUBSCRIPTION '' , p2p programs doesn't need a subscription except Napster and Itunes .

4. If your pc is infected already get a spyware remover like SpySweeper , Ad-aware , Spybot S&D , Microsoft AntiSpyware . Having only one spyware remover installed sometimes is not enough , personally i'm using all the programs mentioned above .

KazaaLite, unfortunately, is dead, Drac. May it RIP. It is the victim of a copyright infringement suit by its sypware counterpart.

In addition to the others you mention, I think ExeemLite also looks promising even tho it's beta. I don't have a link, but I'll report back if I get it going and can get it to work thru my firewall.

I'm using WinMX as a KL replacement and it seems to be active and healthy at the moment, but I'm not convinced it's not how Gater is getting into my system. Just an annoyance as much as anything else tho.

But we let them know: just to be sure, we're going to take your $5,000,000 and develop this product. Then we're going to surreptitiously install it on 20% of the personal computers out there. Once we've tracked sites visited, terms searched and such-like, we'll get back to you with some figures.

But just so you know - we're calling it for porn right from the start."

And now, it's a satisfied Dave Schatz that begins to pack his personal belongings into a cardboard box. His 18 co-workers have almost finished packing their own boxes. Exeem without the adware
If you want to play with eXeem, the distributed, MPAA-proofed BitTorrent aggregator, but don't want to acquire lots of adware and crapware, give Exeemlite a try. From the Infoanarchy post:

Exeemlite client is out. It removes the adware, but is a version behind the latest eXeem release. The latest release is out of private beta, but on the surface of it, the current version of exelite is not. Not to fear. Just close the popup asking for a serial, and off you go (ie. requiring the serial feature has been neutered, along with the adware.)

Note that you can manually unistall the adware from the latest oficial release, but when you restart eXeem, it _helpfuly_ reinstalls the adware (cydoor I think...)

Taxpayers get unexpected return--sex chat

"Hi, sexy. Welcome to Intimate Encounters."

Not exactly the kind of message you expect to hear in the middle of doing your taxes, but that's just what some TurboTax customers are getting as they try to set up their state returns.

A message in the business version of Intuit's market-leading tax preparation software erroneously directs customers to a sex talk operation.

The message pops up when TurboTax Business users advance to their state tax return and decide they need to file for more than the single state return supported in the product. The message in the software tells them they can purchase software for additional states, at $30 each, online or by calling an 800 number.

That number goes straight to Intimate Encounters, which bills itself as "the exciting new way to go live, one-on-one, with hot...girls waiting to talk with you." The pre-recorded message on the site makes no mention of tax preparation services, although you never know what you can get for 99 cents a minute.

Intuit acknowledges the mistake in a customer support alert that offers another 800 number but doesn't admit where the original one goes.

An Intuit representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Paki Papaioanu, president of SyncroVision, an IT services firm Somerville, Mass., discovered the typo as he was installing tax software for clients.

Papaioanu said he initially tried to order state software over the Web but found Intuit's site a little confusing when it came to which product he needed. He decided he needed to talk to a real person and called the 800 number listed.

"I thought it was going to take me to India, and then I got...this," he said. "I thought I dialed the wrong number. They don't usually talk to you like that at a tax operation."

"We're all having a really good laugh about this," Papaioanu said. "It's kind of amazing nobody checked this before the CDs went into production."

Don't forget that file sharing is plagued with trojans and Virus..

Anything you download should be Scanned with a trojan scanner and

antivirus scanner ..Most common infestations are hidden in cracks and

keygenerators or registry entries .. Unzipped archives are easier to scan

but malicious code can be executed in the unzip process ..

Look for scanners that scan code within archives

I use ATS ...

I don't know if it was included in the above list, but RealPlayer is ripe with scumware and is just a piece of crap software despite its' ubiquity. Since RealPlayer is often the only media format that many websites offer, people feel compelled to use it.
